A project bringing together art and medicine to reflect on the human heart led by Sofie Layton and bio-medical researcher Dr Giovanni Biglino in collaboration with leading cardiovascular centres in London, Bristol and Newcastle. The exhibition toured to Newcastle and Bristol and featured at Digital Design Weekend, V & A 22 – 23 September and in full at Copeland Gallery, London 1 – 11 November 2018.
The Heart of the Matter exhibition was inspired by encounters and collaborations with patients with heart conditions, their families, artists, researchers, nurses and clinicians, the exhibition featured 3D printing, digital animation, textiles, sound and sculpture. The artworks and the stories that influenced them offer insight into this extraordinary organ, which is both the engine room of our body and a symbol of human emotion.
The Heart of the Matter was developed with health psychologist Jo Wray and produced by Anna Ledgard, Susie Hall (GOSH Arts) and Nicky Petto in association with Artsadmin, and is supported by the Wellcome Trust, the Blavatnik Family Foundation, Above & Beyond, Great Ormond Street Hospital, British Heart Foundation, and with lottery funding from Arts Council England. With thanks to RapidformRCA and 3D Life Print and British Heart Foundation.
